Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer who crafted many legendary styles favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, including the soft-colored suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."
Price's death comes less than a month after he presented his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he started his work in men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping form-fitting garments established him as a "genuine original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
The industry mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose legacy on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
