Gavin Newsom Confirms He Is Weighing a Presidential Campaign for 2028

The California governor, a leading Democratic figure, has disclosed that he intends to determine whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 following the 2026 congressional elections conclude.

"Absolutely, I couldn't be truthful otherwise," Newsom commented when pressed about giving serious thought to a campaign for president after the 2026 elections. "That wouldn't be honest. And I won't do that."

Newsom's current term as governor ends in the start of 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. Yet, he cautioned that any decision is not imminent.

"The future will decide," he remarked.

Growing Prominence as a Political Adversary

Newsom has come to the forefront as a notable adversary of the former president's team, employing his digital presence and advocating for a initiative that would boost Democratic representation in Congress in as a counter to GOP gerrymandering. This strategy has drawn criticism from critics.

Federal Funding Dispute

Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor does not care about the state's residents in a Sunday appearance on Fox News. Duffy announced intentions to pull government money from the state and threatened revoking the state's ability to grant commercial driver's licenses.

"I intend to cut $160m from the state," Duffy declared, following a recently reported tragic collision in California involving an undocumented commercial driver that resulted in fatalities and injured individuals.

His administration noted that the national authorities had renewed the individual's authorization repeatedly, which enabled him to secure a CDL under U.S. law.

Duffy had previously indicated he was blocking $40m from California for not enforcing language proficiency rules for CDL holders.

Pointed Reply from the Team

"Ex-reality TV personality, now transportation chief, fails to grasp federal law," Newsom's office retorted in a recent statement responding to Duffy's threats. "In the meantime, in contrast to this person, we'll stick to the facts: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a fatal crash rate significantly lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the single state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Facts don't lie. The Trump administration does."

Public Opinion and Campaign Considerations

A recently conducted survey showed that 72% of Democrats and almost half of voters indicated that Newsom must consider running for president in the next election cycle. Since Trump took office, Newsom's favorability has increased to an typical level of about one-third from approximately 30%, while his disapproval has fallen from an mean of more than 40% to under 40%.

Earlier this year, Newsom remarked while traveling several key regions that he had "no clue" about his future for 2028.

He also referenced his earlier challenges, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the early childhood.

"The thought that a guy who got 960 on his SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was typically not at the front – the fact that this is even suggested is, by itself, remarkable," he commented. "No one can say? I await who emerges in 2028 and who rises to the occasion. And that's the question for the U.S. citizens."
