Glasgow Warriors kicked off their Champions Cup campaign in ideal fashion with a crucial bonus-point away victory against Sale Sharks.
Taking advantage of the wind at their backs, the hosts started strongly and built a 14-0 advantage within the first quarter. Tries from Ernst van Rhyn and teenage debutant Ollie Davies put them in command.
However, the visitors responded admirably with two tries before the interval. Hooker Hiddleston and flanker Darge both went over to narrow the gap.
Further after the break tries from Kyle Steyn and centurion Stafford McDowall extended the Warriors' advantage to twelve points. A late try for Sale set up a tense finish, but Glasgow held firm to claim a major opening victory.
Play started with a quick try as skipper Van Rhyn scored from close range after only two minutes. An early injury to centre Ma'asi-White introduced teenager Ollie Davies into the action for his European debut.
The youngster made an instant contribution. Switching to fly-half, he took a smart support line to collect an pass and score, making the home side's lead.
Against difficult weather, Glasgow turned to their forward power to fight back into the game. A powerful driving maul was finished by hooker Gregor Hiddleston. Prior to the break, Darge forced his way over, with Adam Hastings' conversion making it a two-point game at half-time.
Glasgow took the lead for the first time early in the restart. A poor box-kick was gathered by number eight Jack Dempsey, who fed skipper Kyle Steyn to break a challenge and sprint to the try-line.
Now in the driving seat, Glasgow secured the bonus point when Stafford McDowall powered past a tackle to score his century for the club. That score completed a sequence of twenty-six unanswered points.
The hosts gave themselves a late hope when Louw showed neat footwork to score. The conversion made it a one-score game with minutes remaining.
One last opportunity came for them from a line-out in the 22, but they lost the possession, confirming Glasgow's victory.
Sale Sharks must regroup ahead of a journey to face Clermont Auvergne next Saturday. In contrast, Glasgow will host six-time winners Toulouse to their home ground.
The two sides are placed in a strong Pool One that also features the English side and South African team the Hollywoodbets Sharks.
