The US region renowned for its historical past, maple syrup and frigid, snow-covered winters is experiencing a dramatic change. A recent study finds that New England is warming faster than almost anywhere else on the planet.
The rate of warming in New England makes it the most rapidly warming region of the continental United States, according to the research. The rate of its temperature rise has apparently accelerated significantly in the past five years.
"Temperatures is not only rising, it's accelerating," stated a primary researcher on the project. "It's really sped up in the past few years, which was unexpected to me. Our climate is moving in a different trajectory, after being largely consistent for millennia."
The analysis positions the north-eastern US among the fastest-warming areas in the world, alongside the Arctic and sections of Europe and China. "The region is now moving toward being like the south-eastern US," the researcher noted.
For the study, researchers analyzed multiple data sources on day and night temperatures and snow cover dating back to 1900. The review covered the six states of the New England region.
They found that New England has warmed by an mean of 2.5°C (4.5°F) from 1900 to 2024. This is substantially higher than the worldwide mean, with the planet warming by around 1.3 degrees Celsius in the comparable timeframe.
"That is extremely rapid warming, which is worrying," commented the study author.
A major reason for this unusual accumulation of heat may be shifts in the Atlantic Ocean. The global seas are absorbing more than 90% of the surplus thermal energy trapped by emissions.
In the north Atlantic, an influx of cold, fresh water from Greenland’s melting glaciers is slowing down the Atlantic current. This is directing warmer water into the coastal waters, congregating heat along the shoreline that is then carried inland by wind patterns.
"The excess heat from climate change is being held in the sea like a massive storage unit," explained the researcher. "This is now being discharged into the atmosphere and New England is a receiver of that heat."
Once considered a mild climate haven, New England has suffered severe climate events in recent years, including devastating flooding and prolonged dry spells.
The increasing temperatures poses a threat to cherished elements of local culture:
"I live just north of Boston and when I arrived in the 1990s I used to ice skate on the ponds all the time," said the researcher. "That tradition has pretty much vanished from large parts of southern New England."
