The Caribbean Nation Grants US Military Access to National Airfields Amid Escalating Strains with Venezuela

The government of Trinidad and Tobago has confirmed it will allow the United States military to operate from its airports shortly. This move comes as heightening geopolitical friction between the US and its neighbor Venezuela.

Radar Installation Raises Questions

This statement follows the recent deployment of a military-grade radar system at an airport in Tobago. Caribbean officials state the radar's intended role is for curtailing illegal operations, asserting it is not a launchpad for attacks against foreign states.

Skeptics warn, however, that the partnership risks pulling Trinidad and Tobago into former President Donald Trump's ongoing efforts against Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.

Nature of Access and Official Statements

According to a ministry statement, US activities at the airports would be “logistical in nature”, assisting with supply replenishment and regular staff changes. The government provided no further details beyond this.

The nation's leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar has in the past praised US airstrikes targeting suspected drug ships in regional waters, actions that have allegedly led to multiple deaths, among them several Trinidadian citizens.

Initial Claims and Later Disclosures

At first, Persad-Bissessar said a US C-17 aircraft arriving in Tobago was carrying marines to help on a civilian road construction project. However, following photographic evidence of the radar installation, she conceded that at least 100 marines were on the ground in the country, accompanied by the high-performance radar.

The radar, believed to be a long-range AN/TPS-80 G/ATOR, is marketed as air surveillance, defense, and artillery detection operations.

Trinidad and Tobago is situated a mere seven miles from Venezuela at their closest point. It has two primary international gateways: Piarco International in Trinidad and ANR Robinson International in Tobago.

The airport access agreement follows a previous incident in October, when a US naval vessel was stationed in Trinidad's capital, signaling the Trump administration's growing military posture against Venezuela.
