A young person from Australia has faced legal proceedings after allegedly defacing a large art piece of a mythical creature by affixing plastic eyes to it.

Amelia Vanderhorst, aged 19, participated via phone at the local court in the state of South Australia on Tuesday, charged with one count of damaging property.

Officials commented at the moment of the September incident, the municipal authorities explained that CCTV footage captured a individual putting artificial eyes on the sculpture, which residents have nicknamed the “Blue Blob”.

Ms Vanderhorst did not enter a plea and informed the court she was unwell, according to media sources, with the magistrate advising her to find a legal representative before her upcoming hearing in December.

A day after the reported event, the local mayor said that restoration to the popular community sculpture would be costly as the adhesive eyes could not be removed without harming the art piece.

“This intentional vandalism to a cherished community art is unacceptable and disrespectful,” Mayor Lynette Martin remarked in mid-September. “It is not innocent amusement, it is pricey - it is also frustrating to those people of our community who have embraced the Blue Blob.”

The mayor added the local government would seek the “substantial” repair costs from those accountable for the damage.

At the time the sculpture was first proposed, it drew varied responses from the area residents due to its price tag and appearance.

Costing 136,000 Australian dollars ($89,000; sixty-eight thousand pounds), the sculpture represents a mythical megafauna, with the sculpture’s designers influenced by an prehistoric anteater-like marsupial discovered in nearby caverns that was “huge, slow-moving, and intriguing”.
